The inner suburb of Herston is located three kilometers from the Central Business District. The Royal Brisbane Hospital complex, Ballymore Rugby Union Park and Victoria Point Golf Course and Driving Range make up a large part of the suburb. The majority of the rest of the suburb is made up of residential properties, with light industry near the main roads. Herston was settled in 1850’s when the First Premier Sir Robert Herbert and Attorney-General John Bramston built their farm house here. They named it Herston, a combination of their names. Herston is the location of Royal Brisbane Hospital complex, and includes both the Queensland Institute of Medical Research and the Royal Children’s Hospital. Many other related associations and doctors rooms can be found in the surrounding streets, for example Ronald Mc Donald House and the Leukemia Support Association. An entry point of the north south Tunnel Project is located across Herston Road at Bowen Hills. The Inner City Bypass has an exit onto Herston Road, and to the Royal Brisbane Hospital. The Inner Northern Busway runs through the south of the suburb, diverting buses from the busy main roads.
