Located seven kilometres west of Brisbane’s Central Business District, Indooroopilly is a thriving residential and commercial suburb. Indooroopilly is the location of the largest shopping centre in Brisbane’s western suburbs – Indooroopilly Shopping Centre, which was opened in 1970. Along Moggill Road there are significant retail and office locations. The area was first settled in the 1860’s and agriculture and dairying were the main industries. In 1875 the Albert Rail Bridge was built across the Brisbane River to open the Ipswich rail line. A silver and lead mine was opened in 1919 in Indooroopilly. It ran until 1929, when it was shut due to unprofitability. The site has since been taken over by the University of Queensland as a training mine.
